Laser Hair Removal

Candela’s Gentle Max Pro sets the standard for safe and effective laser hair removal. The treatment is quick and virtually pain-free and most patients are finished within six treatment sessions.

How does laser hair removal work?

The most effective treatments occur when the hair is in its active growth state (the Anagen phase). Hair can only be reduced if it is actively growing and somewhere close to the surface of the skin. Each body part has a different growth rate so if you are treating several areas at the same time, you many need to stagger appointments to capture that optimum growth state.

As you age, different hair follicles will mature and produce hair. The heat from the laser penetrates the hair shaft in attempts to destroy the hair follicle. If the hair being treated is in the Anagen phase, then those hairs will be destroyed.

The hair must have pigment associated with it. Grey and Blond hair do not respond to laser hair removal and light-red hair can be more challenging to treat due to the lighter pigment.

Hormonal changes will aggravate this somewhat. If your hormones are volatile and change on a regular basis just be aware that you may need follow up treatments throughout your lifetime.

If the full shaft of the hair is removed prior to treatment, there is no conduit for the laser light to reach the hair root. Shaving or clipping is the best way to maintain active hair growth. It is very important to keep on the schedule we give you for your treatments to get your optimum results.

What happens during hair removal treatment?

The area of your skin that is to be treated will be pulsed with the Candela Gentle Max Pro. Treatment time will depend upon the area to be treated. The system automatically delivers a blast of cryogenic air before the laser is fired in order to pre cool the skin, making the treatment even more comfortable.

How do I prepare for my appointment?

Because you want the laser to be delivered deep into the hair follicle, you want the hair to be as short as possible, meaning we will ask you to shave the day before or the morning of your treatment. Skin should be clean during treatment, free of any lotions and oils. You may not pluck or wax the hairs for four weeks before treatment, but shaving is ok. Make sure to stay out of the sun two weeks before and after your treatment. You must also refrain from spray tanning or self-tanner on your skin for two weeks before treatment. Finally, please avoid any antibiotics two weeks before treatment.

What should I expect after treatment?

Generally, some redness will remain and is normal up to five days.  It can be longer for some patients and shorter for others. Slight swelling may be present in the area that has been treated; however, this should subside within a few hours. If any prolonged redness or swelling occurs, you should consult with our Nurse or Medical Director. Following laser hair removal, you will need to keep the area clean and use a sunscreen with at least SPF 15 when outdoors.

Are there any possible complications?

There is a low risk of pigment changes in the skin. Please be sure to discuss any concerns with us prior to your treatment. We can outline all possible complications and ensure that you have a worry-free treatment.  Please see below the contraindications of laser hair removal.

Is treatment permanent?

Typically, each laser treatment results in some permanent hair loss and most cases require several treatments. The number of treatments will depend on your response to laser therapy and the amount of hair to be removed. As with other treatments for unwanted hair, there is no guarantee that your laser hair removal treatment will be permanent; future “touch up” sessions may be required each year.

How many treatments will I need?

Typically, hair removal or hair reduction requires a minimum of six treatments done at four-to-eight-week intervals. There are three phases of hair growth: Anagen, Catagen and Telogen. Only the hairs in the active growth phase (the Anagen) can be successfully treated.

Does treatment hurt? What can I expect with the procedure?

Most clients describe laser hair removal as feeling “prickly” sensation. Afterwards, it may feel like a sunburn. Different areas on the body can be more sensitive than others.  Most of our clients have minimal pain associated with the laser hair removal.
